Monamy, Peter
English Painter, 1681-1749
English painter. It seems likely that his family origins and name were French. The Painter-Stainers' Company records that he was apprenticed as a house painter to William Clarke from 1696, but by 1710 he had become a marine artist, filling the gap in the market left by the death of Willem van de Velde the younger in 1707. Most of his subsequent career was devoted to careful imitations of van de Velde's style (and, in some cases, of particular pictures), by which, according to Vertue, 'he distinguished himself and came into reputation'. He maintained his links with the Painter-Stainers, of which he had been made a freeman in 1703 Related Paintings of Monamy, Peter :. | Calm scene of a yacht offshore with another ship firing a salute | The Privafteer Squadron, known as the Royal Family | An Action at Gibraltar | A Small Sailing boat and a merchantman at sea in a rising Wind | Four Prints of an election | Related Artists: Jacobus Storck (1641 - c.1700) was a Dutch Golden Age marine painter.
Storck was born and died in Amsterdam. According to Houbraken he was the brother of the marine painter Abraham Storck who painted views of the Rhine and inland ships, but who was not as gifted.
According to the RKD he was the second son of the marine painter Johannes Sturckenburgh, younger brother of the marine painter Johannes Storck and older brother of Abraham. Signed works by him are dated 1664-1687. He sometimes signed JA Storck, which since 1963 has been interpreted as a work by both Jacobus and Abraham together.
